Bus

Buses are one of the most common forms of transportation in Ghana and offer a convenient and affordable way to travel between cities and towns. There are both private and public options available for transport. They are convenient and easy to book.

Ride hailing apps

Ride-hailing apps are a popular and widespread option for transportation in Ghana. These apps are easily accessible by downloading them from the App Store or Google Play Store. In addition to international ride-hailing apps, there are also several Ghanaian-originated ride-hailing apps available. Investors can choose from a variety of ride-hailing options to suit their transportation needs.

Taxi

Taxis otherwise known as cabs are available in cities and towns and offer a more convenient and comfortable option for transportation, although they are typically more expensive than buses and ‘trotros’.

Trotros

Trotros are a popular mode of transportation in Ghana. These small minivans and buses operate along set routes, picking up and dropping off passengers as they go. Trotros are known for being cheap and convenient, making them a popular choice for commuters and travellers alike.

Despite their popularity, Trotros can be a challenging experience for newcomers. The vehicles are often overcrowded and the driving can be erratic. However, for those who are willing to brace the experience, Trotros offer a unique opportunity to see and interact with the local culture.

Private cars

Private cars, such as rental cars, can also be used for transportation in Ghana and offer a more flexible and comfortable option, but they are generally more expensive than other forms of transportation.

Motorcycles and scooters

Motorcycles and scooters are popular in urban and rural areas. They can be a faster and more efficient mode of transportation for short distances. However, it's important to note that motorcycles are considered illegal for commercial transportation purposes and can only be used as a means of private transport. In recent years, tricycles, commonly known as "Pragyia", have emerged as a prominent mode of public transport in Ghana, especially in urban areas. These three-wheeled vehicles are affordable and can accommodate several passengers, making them an efficient and cost-effective option for short trips. However, the use of Pragyia has been a subject of controversy due to safety concerns, with reports of accidents and fatalities. As a result, the Ghanaian government has implemented measures to regulate the use of Pragyia, including mandatory registration, licensing, and safety regulations.

Rail Transportation

Railways in Ghana are an important mode of transportation, offering a safe, reliable, and comfortable way for commuters and travellers to move around the country. The Ghana Railway Company Limited (GRCL) is the primary railway operator in the country, and it manages both passenger and freight services.

Passenger services offered by GRCL include the Accra-Tema commuter service, which operates between Accra and Tema as well as the Sekondi-Takoradi route. However, at present the Accra-Tema line offers only one service in the morning and one in the evening and the Sekondi-Takoradi line only operates over part of the distance served. Freight services are also available, providing an efficient way to transport goods between major cities in Ghana. It is important to note that railway systems are still in development in the country and expansion projects are still in development.

Preventive measures before taking the road

When traveling by road, please be aware of potential risks, particularly when driving at night or during adverse weather conditions. These conditions may limit visibility and increase the likelihood of accidents. We advise you to exercise caution and prioritize safety when planning your trip.

Moving by Air

Air transportation in Ghana is an important aspect of the country's transportation system, serving both domestic and international travel needs. The country has one major international airport, the Kotoka International Airport, which is in the capital city of Accra. Additionally, there are several domestic airports and airstrips scattered throughout the country.

Air travel in Ghana is generally considered safe and reliable, with modern facilities and experienced pilots. The country's airports are equipped with modern navigation and communication equipment and are subject to stringent safety regulations and oversight.

However, like in any other country, air travel in Ghana can be affected by weather conditions, delays, and cancellations. It is therefore advisable for travellers to check with their airlines before embarking on a trip, and to arrive at the airport with ample time to clear security and other formalities.

Private Jet Services

Private jet operators provide a range of aircraft options, from small jets to larger planes, and can cater to various travel needs and budgets. Passengers can avoid long lines and delays at commercial airports and enjoy personalized service and flexibility in scheduling. Some private jet operators in Ghana may have access to private airfields or landing strips, depending on the location of the destination, allowing for quicker and more convenient travel.

Several airports in Ghana offer dedicated facilities for private jet arrivals, such as FBOs (fixed-base operators) that offer services such as fueling, aircraft maintenance, and ground handling. These airports include the Kotoka International Airport in Accra, as well as the Kumasi and Tamale Airport.

Moving by Water

Sea and water transport are essential for Ghana's economy, with two major seaports; Tema Port and Takoradi Port which serve as critical hubs for the movement of goods and cargo. Plans are underway to develop a modern passenger ferry service to connect southern and coastal regions, offering a unique way for tourists to explore Ghana's coastline. Additionally, the Volta Lake provides an important transport artery for fishing, irrigation, and the movement of goods as a good alternative to road transportation.
