Shopping in Ghana chapter from Doing Business in Ghana V1 (2024), ready for V2 enrichment.

Shopping in Ghana

Groceries Shopping

There has been an increase in the country's use of mass supermarket retail stores in accordance with the country's expanding urban population. It is advised to shop in open markets or smaller stores rather than big supermarkets while grocery shopping in Ghana. This is significant because fresh local produce may be purchased more easily than imported stuff but mostly because smaller retailers have lower prices. Since Ghana heavily relies on agriculture and food production, there is mass availability of groceries and $30 worth of groceries can cater for one individual in a week. When shopping for groceries, ask for assistance from other customers if you are unsure whether something is safe or not.

Other Shopping & Online Shopping

Ghana's society is fundamentally based on open-air markets. Others run on a set schedule, while some operate every day. A 7-day cycle is typical in Accra and other major cities in the country. Periodic markets, which benefit both buyers and sellers by concentrating sales into smaller timescales, are thought to have evolved in relation to the decreased demand for commodities in remote regions.

Post COVID-19, online shopping and e-commerce platforms have gained wide notoriety due to the massive patronage and the easy cost of setting up. With online shopping on the rise, one should exercise caution when making any kind of online transaction. There are a number of these shops that provide their customers with first-rate services.

Shopping needs can also be met in informal open-air markets.
